FACO Cataract Surgery in Roatán (Phacoemulsification)

FACO (phacoemulsification) cataract surgery is the most modern, safe, and effective technique to remove a cataract through a tiny, suture-free micro-incision. We use a phacoemulsifier, whose ultrasonic probe breaks up the cataract so a permanent, highly biocompatible, top-quality intraocular lens can be inserted. Its optical power is calculated before surgery through specific tests called biometry and keratometry, so the lens is custom-made for each patient — all to improve and restore the patient’s vision.

The advantages are:

  1. It is the safest and fastest technique.
  2. The surgery lasts about 10 minutes.
  3. Less inflammatory response.
  4. You are seeing normally the next day.
  5. Faster recovery time.
  6. It provides the highest and best quality of vision.
  7. No pain and no hospitalization.

What is the whole process like?

The patient arrives at the clinic and is given a relaxant. The eye to be operated on is dilated and, once dilated, the patient goes to the anesthesia room. THE ANESTHESIA DOES NOT HURT. The patient then goes to the operating room for surgery. The surgery takes about 7 minutes and is painless. A patch is placed on the eye and the patient goes home to rest. The next day we see the patient, remove the patch, check vision, evaluate the eye with the slit lamp, and provide the medication with instructions. We then see the patient at 10 days and again at one month. These three post-operative evaluations are free.

Time it takes on the day of surgery

  • Surgery duration: 10 minutes.
  • Local anesthesia application: 10 minutes.
  • Eye dilation: 20 to 40 minutes.

Total time for the whole process: approximately 50 minutes.

Aftercare

  • Do not bend your head down.
  • Do not sleep on the operated side.
  • Avoid pets inside the house, and do not touch them.
  • Apply the drops as directed by the doctor.
  • Do not lift heavy objects.
  • No dietary restrictions — if you are healthy, you may eat what you like.
  • Do not drink alcohol.
  • Do not smoke.
