The eyes are a true extension of the brain: they are the main sensory organ we use to receive information from the outside world. They are connected to the brain by nerves and are able to capture light and transform it into electrical impulses that the brain processes to create the images we see.

How the eyes send information to the brain

The retina is the part of the eye responsible for collecting light and converting it into electrical impulses. It contains sensory cells called cones and rods, responsible for the perception of light and color. Those impulses travel through the optic nerve to the brain, where they are processed and turned into images.

In addition to the retina, the eye has other components that help focus light and regulate how much enters. The lens and the cornea focus the light, while the pupil contracts or dilates to control how much light comes in.

More than vision: balance and movement

The connection between the eyes and the brain also allows the body to adapt to different levels of light, such as seeing in dark or very bright environments. This adaptation is possible thanks to the interaction between the light receptors in the retina and the brain’s regulatory mechanisms.

The eyes are also fundamental for balance and movement control. They work together with the inner ear and the body’s receptors to inform the brain about the position of the body in space, which helps us maintain balance and make precise movements.

Why it is so important to take care of your eyes

Because the eyes are so closely linked to the brain, any eye problem or disease can significantly affect quality of life. Regular eye exams are essential to detect problems in their early stages and prevent major complications, such as glaucoma. To maintain good eye health it also helps to protect the eyes from the sun, avoid smoking and follow a healthy diet for your vision. Discover more reasons to take care of your eyes.
